The Dynamics of Social Conflict and Overlapping Differences

A social division takes place when some social difference overlaps with other differences. The fundamental fabric of a society is tested when distinct identities begin to align with specific systemic disadvantages. When one kind of social difference becomes more important than the other, people start feeling that they belong to completely different communities. This phenomenon creates a deep fault line within the society. The difference between the Black and White populations becomes a profound social division in the United States precisely because the Blacks tend to be poor, homeless, and historically discriminated against. It is not merely a matter of racial diversity; it is the fact that racial identity overlaps with severe economic and social marginalization, transforming a social difference into a volatile social division.

In our own country, a strikingly similar dynamic can be observed in the context of the Dalits. Dalits tend to be poor and landless, and they often face severe discrimination and profound injustice in their daily lives. Just as in the American example, the social categorization of caste in India overlaps heavily with economic deprivation and social exclusion. Situations of this kind, where multiple disadvantages compound upon a single group, produce rigid social divisions. When identities overlap in this manner, the overlapping social differences create the unfortunate possibilities of deep social divisions and escalating societal tensions, making bridging the gap between communities incredibly difficult.

Accommodation Through Cross-Cutting Interests

Conversely, the sociological landscape changes dramatically if social differences cross-cut one another. When differences cross-cut, it is structurally and socially much more difficult to pit one group of people against the other. This dynamic means that groups that share a common interest on one particular issue are highly likely to be on different sides on a completely different issue. To understand this, we must consider the distinct cases of Northern Ireland and the Netherlands. Both of these nations are predominantly Christian, yet their populations are deeply divided between Catholics and Protestants.

In Northern Ireland, class and religion overlap directly with each other. If you are a Catholic in Northern Ireland, you are also heavily more likely to be poor, and you may have suffered a long history of institutionalized discrimination. This precise alignment of religious identity with economic disadvantage created an explosive environment. The result is that Catholics and Protestants have had severe and enduring conflicts in Northern Ireland.

However, the situation in the Netherlands provides a stark contrast. In the Netherlands, class and religion tend to cut across each other rather than overlap. Catholics and Protestants are about equally likely to be poor or rich. Because economic status does not align exclusively with one religious group, individuals from both sects share economic interests that transcend their religious boundaries. The result is that they do not perceive each other as monolithic, competing blocs, and consequently, they do not experience the violent conflicts seen in Northern Ireland. Ultimately, cross-cutting social differences are substantially easier to accommodate within a democratic framework than overlapping ones.

The Global Prevalence of Social Divisions and Multiculturalism

Social divisions of one kind or another exist in most countries, proving to be a universal challenge for modern nation-states. It does not matter whether the country in question is phenomenally large or relatively small.
